This report from @risj_oxford on media use during the #COVID19 pandemic is both illuminating and alarming. It confirms some things we thought we knew and reveals other things we didn’t ⬇️

In the UK, online & TV dominate as main sources of news. 79% of people got news in some form online, 70% from TV, and 43% from social media. Newspapers at 17% - ouch…

3. 24% of 18-24 yr olds used Insta for #coronavirus news, 19% used Snap, & 6% used TikTok.

More people are discussing coronavirus news on messaging platforms/private groups than were discussing news on the same platforms in 2019. In the UK, FB groups: 8% to 31%. Whatsapp groups: 2% TO 44%!

Only 12% of people trust messaging apps as news sources, despite there being an influx of #misinformation being shared on WhatsApp & other messaging platforms.
Potential for targeted interventions on the segment of the pop. to slow the spread of mis/disinfo - the tricky bit is figuring out how best to reach and affect them

UK citizens still see social media as the main source of misinformation entering their life, despite the chatter around messaging apps.

Something we expected, but not NEARLY as strongly as @risj_oxford’s work displays, is the correlation between low political engagement & poor coronavirus knowledge.
This dovetails with young people and those with low formal education levels not trusting trad. news or government as much, despite them often being effective sources for #coronavirus info, leaving those not engaging at risk
Thanks to the team at @risj_oxford for this timely and necessary report! Great work @rasmus_kleis, @dragz, @nicnewman, @jsbrennen, and @pnhoward.
Reports like these are instrumental for charities like ours to ensure that our work is properly targeted, relevant and effective. @risj_oxford is a huge asset for the whole community and by extension, media consumers everywhere
