Really interesting article that I have already RT’d but there’s a thing that bugs me about it 1/n
It describes the trade-offs that ministers facing between excess COVID19 deaths & reopening the country as *impossible* 2/n
The prospect of “trading-off” deaths of some against liberties of others (economic, social) sounds pretty awful. But isn’t this what govts do everyday? 3/n
Environmental regulations, healthcare funding, homelessness policy, etc - govts make decisions to allocate resources as normal business. 4/n
So it sort of seems that the thing that ministers find *impossible* is the prospect of having accountability for the decisions they will be making. 5/n
No daily count broadcast on nightly news of deaths associated with illegal levels of particulates in the London tube. 6/n giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/ac…
No daily count of homelessness deaths 7/n ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulati…
No daily count of excess deaths from air pollution 8/n wintoncentre.maths.cam.ac.uk/news/does-air-…
I’m not suggesting there should be daily counts for all of these areas, but am absolutely suggesting that ministers make policy choices that impact the number of excess deaths. 9/n
So it seems like it’s not the *choice* that might deliver deaths that’s frightening them. It’s the *accountability* for the choice that frightens them. 10/10
