I’ve been wary of ‘coulda woulda shoulda’ armchair critics of govt strategy around COVID19 using 20:20 hindsight. This @thetimes piece is *very different* & worth a read. 1/n
UK govt said readiness was good. It was poor. It had been smashed by years of austerity policies. 2/n
This was known in govt and surfaced in a 2016 pandemic exercise. Still, nothing done to fix. 3/n
Why was nothing done to address identified healthcare fragilities to the country’s #1 identified threat? Brexit. 4/n
Was this obvious to healthcare professionals? Yes. 5/n
Once the pandemic hit there were a lot of plates spinning. But wow - you’d have thought maybe the Health Dept might contact testing facilities... they didn’t. 6/n
Maybe you’d expect the Dept of Health to order some stuff they knew they’d need from UK suppliers. They didn’t. 7/n
The Times lays much of the blame on Johnson - playing a part-time & distracted PM. 8/n
All in all a blistering read. 9/9
