Dear friends abroad! As promised, I’ll give you an update on the situation in Sweden regarding the #coronavirus and #covid19. Here it comes ->
A total of 14’385 cases have been confirmed as of 19th April, 1540 have died. That equals 150,5 deaths in #covid19 per 1 million citizens in #Sweden. People over 70 years of age, account for 87% of the deaths. Mean age is 81 years. #coronavirussweden
The majority of cases (5826) are in the Stockholm capital region. In the Stockholm region (2’344’000 citizens), 1099 patients with #covid19 are currently hospitalized of which 217 in the ICU. That is fairly stable numbers compared to last week. #coronavirussweden
Many homes for the elderly have depressingly several confirmed cases of #covid19. In Stockholm 191 of 313 homes for the elderly have at least one case. Of the 921 deaths from #covid19 in Stockholm, 380 have tested positive in a home for the elderly. #coronavirussweden
The temporary hospital set up in the Stockholm convention centre (Stockholmsmässan) has not been taken in operation yet, since there are still available beds in the regular hospitals in Stockholm (400 regular + 80 ICU-beds as of 19th April). #coronavirussweden
Currently, 544 patients are receiving intensive care in Sweden’s hospitals for #covid19. There are still available ICU-beds, and more are being prepared. It’s a huge effort, considering that the number of ICU-beds in Sweden was very low: 5/100000 citizens. #coronavirussweden
Some good news though: In Gothenburg region (one of the other big city regions in #Sweden), 90% of the 119 patients that have received intensive care due to #covid19 have survived. #coronavirussweden
The recommendations about social distancing, avoiding crowds, public transportation etc, are still generally followed by the public. Those who can, work from home. #coronavirussweden
So, we are still coping in #Sweden, although the stress on society -especially the healthcare- is high.
Some ask how long we will have to fight this pandemic. There is only one answer to that: As long as we have to!
