This is the subject of my recent arguments against a certain retired judge, who said that the death penalty would scare off would-be criminals. I retorted that it was a lazy way of thinking about & looking into criminality. I will try to recall those arguments here.
Capital punishment has not been a deterrent to crime, whose root causes are in poverty, economic inequities, poor health care, inadequate public services, corrupt govt & justice system, bad educational system, poor human-rights record, & other unfreedoms as as understood
in political philosophy. Rich countries with excellent health care, high employment rate, topnotch educational system, least red tape, competent & honest govt officials, efficient public services & transport system, & good records of human-rights and press-freedom

THREAD: For @politico I mapped out which countries are doing best when both their health and economic #coronavirus outcomes are considered - see here, with @beatricezjin.

#Vietnam is the clear best performer; the US ranks just 24th of 30.… #COVID
#1 Vietnam: The easy ranking leader as the biggest country with no COVID-19 deaths (95m), barely 300 cases, and economy still set to grow 2.7% in 2020.
#2 is #Taiwan: They avoided the need for a full lockdown by taking early action in January, proving that containment was possible despite proximity and other links with China. Still, with 70 percent of GDP linked to exports, Taiwan's economy is on track to shrink 4 percent.

Research shows that supersprreader evens drive the #coronavirus pandemic. That means no crowds at sports events, a limit on wedding guests. Some scientists think banning mass gatherings may be enough to keep #Covid19 in check. My piece via ⁦…

Finland re-opened schools last week. Now they have found COVID-19 in 4 schools and set the pupils and staff in quarantine. Here in Sweden the schools and municipalities don't even inform families of corona infections in school though they still tell about lice and stomach flu. 1/
One exception to the rule is Kågeskolan in Skellefteå where a teacher died and 25% of the staff (18 people) tested positive. None of the pupils were tested. The school closed for a small while - due to lack of staff, not because of a quarantine. 2/8…
Another member of school staff died in Danderyd. No one was tested, no one was quarantined. 3/8…

👇🏼Total #COVID19 deaths per capita in the US vs #Sweden—more evidence that lockdowns save lives.

I called for a nationwide #lockdown in early March. If we‘d locked down then—90% of US #coronavirus deaths thus far could have been avoided.

That’s >72,000 American lives.😰
In early March, I called for a nationwide #lockdown to slow the spread of #coronavirus and save lives and then wrote this piece in the Boston @GlobeOpinion.👇🏼

As states reopen prematurely, new #COVID19 cases will rise.
Here is my op-ed in the @BostonGlobe, calling for massive #lockdowns.

Had we locked down then, TENS OF THOUSANDS of lives could have been saved.😰

Thread: Exponential to Linear & Reopening

On Apr 17, Mr. Trump predicted a MAXIMUM #COVID death toll of 60–65k in 🇺🇸.

I predicted the toll would exceed 65k by today.

That was correct (up to a 24hr reporting delay). Current tally, May 1, is 65,435.

This was my third correct prediction in a row.

My first prediction was on Apr 4 for Apr 12 (~20k deaths).

My second prediction was on Apr 12 for Apr 19 (~40k deaths).

In this pedagogical thread, I will discuss the Exponential trends in cases & deaths, transition to Linear, and the implications for reopening.

To provide some clarity about #COVID19 in #Sweden 🇸🇪, here's our insight into the public health measures, the current situation and considerations for the way forward: @BerlinIgg. Life in Sweden is not continuing as usual during the pandemic. 1/18
Sweden’s strategy may be different from other countries, as it aims not only at reducing #COVID19 transmission but also at reaching other important health goals. The strategy combines regulations and advice with a strong emphasis on individuals’ responsibility for action. 🌍 2/18
Sweden is implementing #COVID19-related interventions with the same aspirations as other countries: reduce transmission and #FlattenTheCurve. 3/18

China needs to divert a sizable portion of its astounding growth over the last 20 years to compensating the global population for this catastrophe. You cannot run a virus generating "wet market" without consequences #StayHome
The eventual damage to global economies will run in the tens of trillions of dollars for this wave of pathogen alone, and #China bears full and sole responsibility #COVID19 #CoronavirusPandemic #StayHome #coronavirus #COVIDー19
Given the original #SARSoutbreak happened in exactly the same way that they then covered up, they need to face some sort of consequence. Once is understandable but twice is carelessness #StayHome

Dear friends abroad! As promised, I’ll give you an update on the situation in Sweden regarding the #coronavirus and #covid19. Here it comes ->
A total of 14’385 cases have been confirmed as of 19th April, 1540 have died. That equals 150,5 deaths in #covid19 per 1 million citizens in #Sweden. People over 70 years of age, account for 87% of the deaths. Mean age is 81 years. #coronavirussweden
The majority of cases (5826) are in the Stockholm capital region. In the Stockholm region (2’344’000 citizens), 1099 patients with #covid19 are currently hospitalized of which 217 in the ICU. That is fairly stable numbers compared to last week. #coronavirussweden

I am getting a lot of question, and there is a ton of opinions about #Sweden

Hence, I will attempt a 'balanced rant' (a rarity for this medium I know)

This is a follow up to the letter I did yesterday…
On the opinions, it is rather binary:
- Some stress the death stats, and think Sweden is about to go to hell (or already there)
- Others stress Sweden has avoided the burden of intrusive and suffocating social distancing; they want to argue that others should follow: liberate!
It is true that the death rate in Sweden looks fairly high compared to other countries in the region

This is clear from fatalities per capita, but the caveat is that not all countries report in the same way. Some look at hospital deaths only.

1) We've been hearing that #Sweden is supposedly doing well without a substantial lockdown. This depends on how we define "well". The graph shows weekly deaths for all ages in 2020 compared to the average deaths in 2015-2019. By week 14/April 5, deaths in 2020 were up ~20%.
2) This excess mortality is driven by the older and more vulnerable age groups 65-79 and 80+ years. The graphs show the weekly deaths in comparison to 2019. Deaths in the age group 65-79 are up by ~30% in 2020 compared to 2019 in the most recent calendar week.
3) Note that 2019 and 2015-2019 had been less lethal than 2020 for several early weeks before #coronavirus became a thing. These data are not from hotspots, but country-wide. The original file can be found at @StatsSweden:…

The curious case of #Sweden

In contrast to other countries Sweden’s confinement measures against #SARS_COV_2 are softer. Their data are for some prove of irresponsible opportunism, for others that the rest overreacted.

Both are (for now) wrong. Long thread on data and nuance./1
Let’s start by debunking some “myths”:
1) and foremost, no, Sweden is not actively pursuing #Herd_Immunity as strategy.
According to Tegnell, Sweden’s state epidemiologist, herd immunity is a *potential* end state, not a potential response strategy.
So what is their strategy? /2
As in other countries their objectives are epidemic peak mitigation while having as little casualties as possible. Math models, as that of the Imperial College, showed millions of deaths if #corona is left unchecked (changing UK and US strategies)./3…

Sweden is doing exactly what Trump threatened to do—keep the economy, restaurants, and bars open. Yet they have all the things we don't have: centrist leaders, reliance on experts & strong public health system. Which challenges the "Trump caused the disastrous US response" thesis
As #Sweden continues to refuse lockdown, its deaths per million is skyrocketing, far exceeding the US as well as its neighbors. Compare to Finland and Norway, for example
Be careful what you wish for: I hear Americans longing for a more centralized response to COVID. Sweden has that. The problem with centralized top-down approaches, though, is they're only good if they're good. If you have a *bad* centralized response, the whole country suffers

An American friend asked me on Facebook "David, I've been reading about Sweden's "strategy." I'm so confused. How is this logical?"

Here was my answer, which I think may help explain the situation - and a hypothesis to end. 1/9 #Sweden #Sverige #COVID19 #tegnell
First issue we have is the government is constitutionally not allowed to "lead" on this. As part of an anti-corruption approach they're not allowed to influence the government authorities, like the Ministry for Health, and essentially have to follow their advice. 2/9 #Sweden
They're also not legally able to restrict people's movement except in an extremely limited way. #Sweden #Sverige #CoronaVirusSverige 3/9

Sweden and their incompetence towards #COVID19.

Here comes the first surrealistic thing. They tell me that Spain is not a risk zone (It was #5 by then already), and Sweden still only counts China, Iran and Italy, so they assume it is impossible it is covid19, and send me to a medical center, opposed to all common sense. 3/8

It is time for one long #Coronavirus update. I have been resisting doing this as (1) I do not want to add to the hysteria & the panic & (2) I don't believe in doomsday predictions. Moreover, things have been moving so fast, who knows what's what. BUT it's time for real talk...
Overall, #Coronavirus (the outbreak of #COVID19) is REAL. The effects on your daily life from the fallout will be REAL. The impact society, economics, & politics in 2020 will be severe & REAL. None of this is Fake News. None of this should be downplayed. (2/
People who are trying to silence REAL discussion are doing a disservice to the public interest. This is a 9/11 & 2008 level event in terms of its impact on domestic & international dynamics. This thread is not about creating panic but encouraging a smarter response. (3/
