Lazy Twitter: Why is the US death rate rising faster than every other country in the world?
The reason might be due to the vast number of asymptomatic spreaders. Each country that locks down later seems to have a larger death rate. The US followed Europe that followed Iran that followed East Asia that followed China.
This is why even if lockdowns are successful, they still come back as you reopen the economy (see: Singapore). This is why South Dakota, despite a sparse population, has rates per 100k that are the same as denser east coast states.
The fumble here is that states selected to lock down only on the severity of their state. This allowed the asymptomatic cases to spread. Likely a virus that is less lethal but lethal enough to kill the vulnerable population.
rt.live shows the transmission rate. The data shows states that appear to have lowered the rate < 1 are also seeing rebounds that are occurring from other areas. This whack-a-mole scenario due to piecemeal action is going to extend longer than expected. #covid_19
It's as if the virus is several steps ahead of the policymakers. It took weeks to convince policymakers about the need for #masks4all. Only when data came in about the percentage of asymptomatic cases did they finally act.
Yet over the weekend, we have states contemplating opening up. They are looking at data that is the result of action taken 14 or more days ago. It's the wrong data! The virus has already spread in their communities and now they are thinking of opening up?
The current failure of the US is the lack of testing of healthcare workers. There are 18 million HCWs, without testing, we cannot know if they are infecting the vulnerable population. This is why we will continue to have mass deaths as we saw in nursing homes in Washington.
In fact, the guidelines by the Federal government explicitly states that health care workers must be tested. Yet, everyone is overlooking this. The media's focus is one what opens up and not the criteria for opening up!
Not only is the Federal gov't not able to execute on delivering tests, but they are also unable to present a coherent and focused message. They couldn't do this for the lockdown and they are failing to do it about what needs to be done to open up. It's a slow-motion trainwreck!
This is what happens when you have management that does not want to be measured. The number of tests performed is a metric, yet messaging keeps avoiding the inability to execute on achieving these metrics. 20m tests are needed! technologyreview.com/2020/04/20/100…
The US is in deep trouble in that tests keep showing that more than 20% have been infected. It's selective testing though, but if covid is now widespread in the US, it's a death sentence to many seniors. theatlantic.com/technology/arc…
