People are agitating for things to get "back to normal" after only less than a couple of months. WWII lasted 5 years. Husbands, fathers, brothers, sons, sweethearts, and also, daughters, sisters, aunts... went away to fight or nurse... 1/8
And no one knew if they would come back. London was bombed daily, except for one day, from September 7, 1940, until May 1941. During the Great Depression, the world went through drought and famine for years. Unemployment was through the roof. Food was in short supply. 2/8
People were desperate. My own Dad at 17 rode the rails because his family couldn't afford to feed him anymore.
In 1918, the Spanish Flu wreaked havoc upon the world. It killed between 20 and 40 million people. The first wave was in the spring of 1918. 3/8
A lot of people got sick, but there were relatively few deaths. The second wave was catastrophic. In the fall of 1918 it hit and victims died within hours or days of showing symptoms. They would turn blue from lack of oxygen and they would suffocate from fluid in their lungs. 4/8
This is what we are looking at here. The first wave is probably just a mild early warning of what is to come. And it has hardly been mild, if you are watching the death toll mount. People are drowning in their own bodies, alone, because family cannot visit. 5/8
This is why we need to be patient. We need to embrace our responsibility to our families, our friends, our co-workers and our fellow humans to BE PATIENT. It's hard. I am not suggesting this is easy for anyone. But we need to do it. 6/ 8
I don't want anyone to die struggling to breathe. But that's how this virus kills you. You can't breathe. It's like a silent assassin, grabbing your throat and choking the life out of you. We all need to find our inner strength and get through this. 7/8
Just like they did in London during the Blitz. Just like families did, waiting for word from a loved one posted overseas during the world wars. No one wants any of this. But we have to be patient and do the right things. To protect all of us. For as long as it takes. 8/8
