I have been an independent writer for the greater part of my writing career. Just eight of my (so far) 30 years of writing have been spent in full time employment.

To write what I want, I have done all I can to remain independent/freelance. That is especially urgent today.
When we emerge from #COVID19 and as we assess the immense toll it has had on so many, I will continue being an independent writer.

When we talk about what we imagine ahead, I want to imagine a world beyond money. A world where “value” and “work/labour” are turned upside down.
Patreon might be the way to maintain my independence. My biggest concern has been keeping my writing as accessible as possible. Not everyone who follows me has a credit card/PayPal etc.

Pay-what-you-can might be the best way. Still considering. But the words in here want to fly

The last time I had a buzzcut, I was 13 years old. I am about to get one again - 40 years later.
I could write a book about my hair, femininity, defiance, hijab, self-expression, sexual assault, ownership of my body, why I dyed my hair red and why now I am cutting it all off.

I dyed my hair red as a fuck you I survived expression of defiance after this 👇🏽 I will miss the red. It’s been my fire. My “I am not hiding. You did not kill me. I am still here.” The buzzcut will be my way of saying I survived, too.

That new Joe Biden ad is xenophobic bullshit.

The two white men fighting to be president of a country which - despite its wealth and power - has failed the most in its #COVID19 response, are doing their most to cover up that failure with anti-China racism.

That ad is an absolute disgrace.
To be clear: I have zero support for the Chinese regime. It must be held accountable for its authoritarianism and human rights violations which predate #COVID19. Remember the way they silenced & endangered the lives of whistleblower doctors.
