Here is a summary thread of today’s #COVID19AB public health update. In the last 24 hours, we confirmed 105 new cases of COVID19, bringing the total number of cases to 2,908. Of those,1,230 people have recovered. (1/7)
We have now tested more than 100,000 people, completing 3,718 tests in the last 24 hours. We now test anyone with COVID symptoms as well as asymptomatic residents & staff in long-term care sites with outbreaks & in certain other outbreak sites to help control spread. (2/7)
Sadly, we’ve had 4 more deaths, now totalling 59. Two were at long-term care sites: 1 at Manoir du Lac and 1 at Carewest Sarcee in Calgary. A 3rd worked at the Cargill Plant in High River and the 4th was in the Edmonton Zone. My sympathies to all family & friends. (3/7)
To clarify case #s at Cargill, 360 cases are workers from the plant, but there has been spread in the community beyond the workers for a total of 484 cases. Many live in surrounding communities like Calgary. A team is working to reduce more spread in this outbreak. (4/7)
Outbreak control measures are also in place at JBS Foods, where 67 cases are related to this workplace & at Kearle Lake, which so far has 12 cases in Alberta and 8 in other provinces. 1 more case has also been found at Foothills Hospital, for 9 total cases there. (5/7)
We will be posting location & facility names of outbreaks. We start tomorrow by posting outbreaks in continuing care and acute fare facilities. Over the next 2 weeks we’ll include outbreaks in other settings, but we need to work out notification processes for these. (6/7)
