I almost can't believe they just read his tweet and said "yep, this checks out, let's print it in the paper of record."
There's a reality out there that people outside the tiny universe of people immersed in politics deserve to understand. Tell them the truth.
There's no justifiable reason to pretend to believe Trump on this. It's a decision to misinform readers.
It's a great piece. And yet it shouldn't have to fall to Greg to lay out basic, obvious truths and debunk the president's lies and pretexts. The paper of record should do that!

.@RepAdamSchiff just told @Lawrence that Democrats will likely propose waiting to stand up their proposed 9/11-style coronavirus commission until after the election. I can't say I'm surprised at this point but that's just completely unacceptable.
A commission requires legislation. Republicans will never agree to it, even if Democrats agree to punt accountability until after people vote. Pelosi could announce she intends to launch a special committee tomorrow.
A special committee could help the public get a handle on what intelligence analysts told Trump back in January when he was taking Xi's word over theirs–and before Americans have to cast their ballots, not after.

Republicans think Republican areas will be better-spared from the epidemic by lower density and a corrupt allocation of resources by the federal government. If they're right, universal vote by mail can only save Democratic turnout from collapse, so it must be opposed.
Is there anything in the stimulus–anything at all–that convincingly binds Trump to allocate recovery resources (existing or within the bill itself) without partisan favor and without blackmail?
There is already powerful evidence that Trump is gaming the coronavirus response for partisan advantage, to help allies, and punish enemies. Now triple the order of magnitude.

Reminder, Trump has already taken punitive public-policy actions against New York and admitted they were retribution for state investigations of his crimes.
Trump seemingly let his resorts in Ireland and Scotland corrupt his already-terrible COVID response, which is itself built around the primary goal of goosing stocks to help his reelection. He will FOR SURE let hatreds and his desire for legal impunity compromise it further.
Again, Trump has already directed punitive action at the state of New York explicitly to extort Cuomo (who doesn’t control investigations) into ending criminal investigations of Trump.
