Surely but how do you put 60 bodies in a 60 sits classroom, when the new conditions call for 30 persons max? Dividing classes in half, renting more classroom space, extending teaching hours to the weekend & evening... that's what we already had in normal conditions (1/9) Thread⏬
Other possibilities: do a mix of in-class teaching and distance teaching?
1. giving an in-class course to half of the class, while the rest of the students connect online: technically possible but questionable experience for everyone (2/9)
2. giving an in-class course to a small group of students, recording this and making it available online to the rest of the students? Recorded lessons have zero interactivity, that's not a promising direction. (3/9)
3. Teaching to a half the class on campus in the morning, and to the other half in the afternoon, for those who stayed at a distance? Ok... but you double teaching hours & assume that the schedule of the students can be arranged this way. (4/9)
And I didn't even mention the problem of managing group activities in a distance x in-class setting for students in different time zones, & the fact that in-class teaching in Sept depends on facility management having implemented all required sanitary procedures by then... (5/9)
So in comparison to all these fragile scenarios, distance learning for the whole class IS a safe option. THEN the question can be: how to provide experiential activities to supplement cold distance learning? That's the 1000€ question. (6/9)
I can't wait to hear @jp_timsit 's experience on the matter of delivering online education beyond zoom. Also, I suspect that campuses, if not fit for in-class teaching as seen above, could be reconfigured for other types of social / learning / career developing activities. (7/9)
Two Google docs on this topic:
- tech setup for in-class x distance learning: drive.google.com/open?id=1Fsj-_…
- what role for campuses in times of distance learning? docs.google.com/document/d/1RO…
(8/9)
End of this thread, but that's just the start of an important conversation I hope. Do contribute in the docs linked above, share them, and don't hesitate reaching out. We must exchange and invent together! #highered #HigherEducation (9/9)
