Did you miss our recent webinar on reducing #HumanWildlifeConflict in the context of engaging communities to tackle illegal wildlife trade (#IWT)?

Well, you're in luck... We've got all the presentations, videos and follow-up in one thread!👇 African wild dog
The webinar began with an intro to the First Line of Defence initiative, from @HollyDublin1: iucn.org/regions/easter…

This uses an interactive methodology, underpinned by a theory of change, to help engage communities more directly in the design of projects to tackle #IWT.
.@HollyDublin1's presentation focused on one of 4 key pathways central to effective community participation: decreasing the costs of living with wildlife.

She used 2 examples from Kenya to highlight the importance of understanding local contexts --> slideshare.net/IIEDslides/fir…
Next, @LivW_H highlighted some @CommunitiesIWT case studies that focus on reducing the costs of living with wildlife - common strategies used to decrease conflict, and compensation for both predation/crop raiding.

The presentation included a focus on @snowleopards, which creates sustainable economic opportunities for communities to reduce motivations for #poaching + projects that reduce costs of living with elephants and whale sharks, with great success --> slideshare.net/IIEDslides/peo…
Don't forget, you can add to the @CommunitiesIWT database, and share knowledge and expertise, by contributing a case study --> peoplenotpoaching.org/contribute

Other features include events, resources and country info all relevant to communities and #IllegalWildlifeTrade.
The final panellist, @AmyDickman4, spoke about @ruahacarnivores, which works with communities surrounding Ruaha National Park in Tanzania to promote coexistence between people & wildlife. It took the project two years to develop a relationship with one particular tribe...
This highlighted that "the way to engage people is offering what they want through #conservation rather than trying to approach them with your agenda".

@AmyDickman4 also discussed linking community benefits to wildlife presence using camera traps --> slideshare.net/IIEDslides/com…
Around 250 people attended the webinar, which concluded with a Q&A session to discuss some of the challenges and successes when implementing community-based conservation initiatives.

Watch the full webinar recording --> #IWT
There were so many questions that the panellists produced a follow-up article to answer some unanswered or those they wanted to provide more detail.

Read the Q&A --> iied.org/qa-answering-y…

Keep your eyes out for another @CommunitiesIWT webinar on these issues in the future...
