I know this is hard. People are hurting on all sides. Money does matter as that is our society’s tool for obtaining essential things like shelter, clothing, and healthcare. For those with strained resources, the current situation makes it that much worse. I get it.
Our job is to protect your health and we just ping pong between making ever more impossible choices weighing risks in our heads like statistics can give us the answer for one particular patient, in one particular situation.
What do I tell a patient with chest pain at home? 3 months ago, the patient comes in and gets a cardiac cath. Today, refusal. She won’t come in because of the virus. How do I convince her? Can I keep her safe? Can I buy her time with meds till this over? When will it be over?
These are the questions we face with every patient. How do we get testing done safely? They may be elderly with limited health literacy. We HAVE to keep them safe. That is our duty as physicians and I hope as society. You want this to be over? So do we. Help us.
