“A letter on behalf of senior clinicians and medical managers in and around Birmingham said that 250 ventilators that they had received, the Shangrila 510 model made by Beijing Aeonmed Co. Ltd., one of China's major ventilator manufacturers, were potentially deadly.”
“To those responding to this by criticizing China only, encourage them to read the story. Drs said issue w ventilators was twofold: serious concerns re quality, but also it was completely the wrong thing for what they needed. Raises serious Qs abt the UK govt procurement process”
Story about the “dangerous” and “unsuitable” Chinese ventilators here from @NBCalex revealing significant issues with quality control in China but also basic procurement due diligence in the U.K. here (@pmdfoster )

Sorry. I should have credited @AlexanderSmith with the revealing story summary and link. And @NBCNews
Of course our Gov should be careful in determining whether what they procure is fit for purpose.

I do think the Chinese Gov owe other countries a social duty of care in certifying products fit for purpose and granting export licences.

Really.

So do Chinese companies
It seems that this ventilator was intended for use in ambulances, so very short term use, and not set up for easy cleaning for infectious diseases.

Surely basic due diligence would have revealed this. Which UK experts were involved in vetting the procurement?
However this is not the first time Chinese products have had to be returned, not fit for purpose including testing kits (bought by Spain) with only 30% sensitivity in some instances.

And PPE of various descriptions.
COVID related PPE and equipment is a big export for China bringing in $1.41 billion to the Chinese economy.

The Chinese Government recognises there is a problem.
The Chinese Gov has been quick to address the concerns, vowing to "crack down on counterfeit and shoddy products" and "mete out punishment with zero tolerance" to any company found to be exporting substandard equipment”

It has withdrawn export licences from 2 companies.
Then there is the attitude of the USA Gov surrounded by allegations of hijacking supplies already subject to purchase orders from other Givernments - and setting up internal bidding wars between the Federal Gov and State Governments.
To add to this sorry tale @pmdfoster updates on where we are with the ventilator challenge and the puzzling disconnect between what those who specialise in ventilation and ICU said was essential and what was in the Government’s orginal spec, setting a baseline not fit for purpose
The ventilator novice companies such as Blue Sky, Oxyvent and Dyson are out of the challenge. The established companies in medical equipments, Penlon and Smiths still in the game.
