One early morning I sat on the steps of the Dashashwamedha Ghat in Varanasi. The sunrise across the Ganga is a super sight. And every day is a new day.

Not far from me, on either side, sat a couple of people who had come, I presumed, to watch the glorious sunrise and feel the cooling breeze that blew across the river.

They were in Varanasi, but they had carried with them the burdens of the cities they came from. I wondered if they really saw the golden orb or felt the 'Thandi Hawa'.

One of the guys, on my right, was busy taking pictures with his camera, attempting to freeze that which flows constantly; Time, Kaala, the Lord of change.

The two men next to him were discussing how big luxury boats are a good investment here. How much the initial investment would be and how much money can be generated.

Two brahmacharis were having a heated argument about whose Guru was superior, one insisting that his Guru could bestow the spiritual experience at the snap of his fingers.

A white couple, with matte blonde hair, wearing rudraksha beads, was absorbed in kissing each other and enjoying the tantric experience. Perhaps the hangover from last night’s bhang still lingered.

Is awareness merely closing your eyes and watching your breath or visualizing the deity? Or is it being aware of the all-pervading deity in the orange rising sun, and wind and the solitary boatman rowing his boat, singing a rustic song?

We carry the dead weight of experience, planning, strategies, profiteering, the constantly calculating mind, wherever we go.

This is what veils our awareness and makes the mind full to the brim with muck,instead of a mindful mind,that has space to be aware of the vast expanse of consciousness.

Kashi is the city of giving up,letting go.
