THREAD: @SenWarren @RepJayapal @RepSarbanes & I have a comprehensive plan to ensure #COVID19 relief funds are going to the people&businesses in need not to enrich corporate giants or reward political allies. Here is a breakdown of what must be done to hold this admin accountable.
1. No senior gov’t officials should be able to profit at the public’s expense. We need to ensure relief funds are not funneled to well-connected businesses/individuals. Conflicts of interest prohibitions must be broader in the people & money they apply to.
2. Time & again Trump has made clear he will go after any IG who threatens oversight of his power & policies. We must do more to protect IGs so they can protect the public from corruption. politico.com/news/2020/04/0…
3. Anyone who thinks the executive branch will freely give information to Congress without a subpoena is gravely mistaken. The Congressional Oversight Commission needs subpoena authority to give their oversight teeth.
4. No transparency, no paycheck. If the admin stonewalls oversight of how the American people’s hard-earned tax dollars are being spent they are undercutting their accountably to the public & must be held responsible. slate.com/news-and-polit…
5. In the Trump admin if you are a whistleblower & speak truth to power, the president & his allies will use every tool at their disposal to retaliate. Whistleblower provisions must protect all Americans who call out wrongdoing.
6. Crony capitalism has no place in the United States. Businesses who receive taxpayer dollars shouldn’t be allowed to use that money to lobby for more taxpayer funding.
7. Sunlight is always the best disinfectant—& w/this admin we need a lot of it. There must be expanded transparency about who is receiving bailout funds & how that money is being used. Companies receiving federal $$ must do right by their employees & not sabotage their workforce.
8. Law without enforcement is dead letter. The Trump admin seemingly doesn’t respect the law unless they can be taken to court. Americans harmed by this admin’s corruption & mishandling of bailout funds should be able to seek justice in the courtroom.
