“Just the Spanish Flu”

Because we had the Roaring 20s after the heavily censored Spanish Flu, some forecast the same outcome today.

However, Corona may be the most covered event in human history. The economy was different then. And consumer behavior has durably shifted.
We know the digital economy of 2020 is more vulnerable to an electromagnetic pulse than the economy of 1918.

Why might the consumer economy of 2020 be more vulnerable to a pandemic than the economy of 1918?

Less complex supply chains, better states, more personal savings?
There’s also a sense in which some modern societies are MORE robust to a virus.

Places that manage to contain the virus like China, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan are relying on modern technology.

We didn’t have PCR or WeChat’s green codes in 1918.
A deep point.

Places that escaped Spanish Flu seem to have either (a) gotten lucky or (b) walled themselves off for the duration.

Places that escape Corona will be enriched for well-run societies which make competent use of tech.

Less luck, more skill.

If the power went out in 1800, no one would notice it. Because there was no power.

Similarly, when the health went out in previous eras, it was less exceptional.

But now we are accustomed to health. And Corona is like the "health" going out.
