All of the care homes are staffed on a wing and prayer anyway. Then you have something like this happen.

I shall do a thread later on the latest ONS data but I just want to concentrate on this part. Remember. This is England and Wales only. Up to week 17 (24 April 2020) since when the DCSC has added over 8k deaths.

2/. Excess deaths from Week 13 (w/e 27 March) at end week 17 stood at 38,417

From week 1 to 12 excess deaths had been 4878 BELOW the 5 year average.

So the two together suggest that COVID has pushed up deaths by 43,349 up to end week 17.
3/ Add Scotland and NI & add at least the 8k more deaths announced by DHSC and I think there are more than the 50k excess deaths @ChrisGiles_ estimated yesterday, even allowing for the backward adjustment DHSC made on 29/4/2020 to include positive test in PH/NHS labs all settings

Vietnam makes a good case for the naysayers who suggest we could not help all those deaths & sickness...
The U.K. is too big! But London!

Vietnam:-
Pop- 96 million
Hanoi- 7 million
First cases late Jan

Now?

270 cases. Zero deaths. No cover up

Whereas the U.K. with pop 65 million has c 29,000 “Official” test positive deaths are 28,734 as of yesterday and that excludes thousands of deaths with COVID on the test certification, indeed tens of thousands of excess deaths.
Even on the most favourable assessment Vietnam has completed more than a million more tests than us.

To do that it started early and aggressively expanding its Lab capacity from 3 to 112 by early April

Japan’s health system exposed as empty hospitals reject Covid-19 patients | Financial Times

In some cases, patients have been turned away from dozens of hospitals, even though Japan, with fewer than 15,000 cases, has relatively few Covid-19 patients.

It also has more hospital beds a head than any other country in the world: twice as many as France and almost five times as many as the US.

But they aren’t ICU beds. Not much different to the UK

And much provision is through private healthcare unwilling to risk CV19 patients.
So it took a GP 7 hours to find a hospital willing to take a 81 yr old man. He had to travel 40 miles.
