That should be rather obvious. The states that have been hit the hardest are NY, MI, LA, NJ, and WA etc. Most of the Governors in those states have received glowing coverage for their COVID-19 response (& coincidentally have the same letter next to their names).
While the Governors that have received almost all the press criticism (FL, GA, ND, WY) have fared fairly well and all have same letter by their name.
Doesn't mean that some of the praise and criticism hasn't been warranted, but clear that it's not being driven mostly by data.

Again, I do think several of those Dems have done a decent job responding to a tough situation (though it's weird Newsom hasn't gotten more praise). But I also think a lot of reporters start with the presumption that Dem Govs are doing the right things & Rep Govs shd be copying.
