Floating in the background of the horrendous corruption we witnessed yesterday is the fact that the whole apparatus, from Barr down to these propagandists, has its sites on whoever leaked the news of Flynn's betrayal of the country, and thus his compromised position, to the Post. 
That leak was designed to protect the country, but was also very likely illegal. If Barr's goon squad finds the leaker, Trump either gets his scalp, or we find it was someone (like the former president or, uh, current Dem nominee) who had declassification authority at the time.
Either way, the political fallout will be vast. Not because it will vindicate Trump on the merits in any way, but because Republicans aren't scared of using power to shape public opinion. The Obama administration sabotaged Trump! Someone might go to prison for it!
Suddenly we'll find that hearings matter after all, and Congress's subpoena power isn't toothless. All the genuine scandals Democrats chose to ignore will fall further down the memory hole, and this will appear to be the only genuine malfeasance worthy of oversight.
Do you think the MSM is capable of (or has any institutional interest in) sorting through the blizzard of lies that would suddenly dominate the campaign? Do you think Dems would confidently counter these lies with the very truths they've spent a year running away from? I don't.
Maybe the mystery will go unresolved, or we'll find the source wasn't particularly prominent, and the plan Barr et al have laid out won't be the p.r. coup they clearly hope it will be. But this is why abdicating the oversight power against unscrupulous thugs was such a blunder.
And if none of this is enough to save Trump's hide, every one of these sleazy characters destroying DOJ independence to build a party-wide campaign strategy around a 3.5 year old leak (and Hunter Biden!) will seamlessly pivot to exhorting Dems to "look forward not backward."
That's why the time for Dems to commit to not playing patsy, to thoroughly investigating the whole criminal enterprise Trump has established, is now.

The fact that over 24 hours later @joebiden has had nothing to say about the wholesale corruption of the Justice Department, which will soon be turned against him, bodes poorly for the election, and for his willingness to hold the prior administration accountable if he wins.
