Our mandate for US talks says we will not compromise on food standards and animal welfare. But a trade minister endorses an article which suggests we should in fact not include animal welfare in trade talks. Which is it?
If this paragraph from the Liam Fox article was true, which it isn't, it would be devastating for the idea of the UK as a sovereign country able to make our own rules. Take it from me that it is simply untrue.
Countries literally sign FTAs to protect and export their rules. That's the modern world. The problem for many in the Brexit camp is they said that was just an EU thing, and are desperate for a US deal, even though the US also exports rules. Holger...
If this government is so concerned about animal welfare why does it not want to make this a key part of our policy which we seek to export through our trade agreements. We can do that. Why don't we? Because the US wouldn't do an FTA on that basis. Who is our trade policy for?
Argue animal welfare isn't so important, that we want to be an open economy, accepting of others rules and standards. Or argue for the UK as a sovereign country able to make and export our regulations. But here's the permanent Brexit problem - we can't be both.
Excellent @CallumIJones piece in the Times today on US trade talks. thetimes.co.uk/article/britai…
