Do regional leaders really think *fewer* people will be using Metrobus over the coming weeks and months compared to today? Do we not all see the obvious danger here? Are we really okay putting tens of thousands of *essential employees* who keep our country running at risk? #wmata
#WMATA has touted that their employees "make the essential possible." That's absolutely true, which is why it's so dangerous to not run enough service to safely transport the essential riders they called out in this graphic:

I will keep saying it: #WMATA should be providing masks to its riders to raise awareness and ensure everyone's safety. It doesn't matter why some people aren't wearing them; Metro employees and riders alike are at risk for as long as people aren't, and enforcement doesn't work.
If providing free masks and hand sanitizer to everyone maintaining or using any of Metro's services requires significant additional resources, local jurisdictions and/or the federal government should be stepping up to the plate to make it happen. Anything less is failure. #wmata
Masks, even simple cloth ones, offer significant protection to everyone around the mask wearer, so even if #WMATA's employees are wearing masks, they are not protected from the inevitable unmasked rider, for example, and equitable enforcement is a near impossibility. @ATULocal689

People are at crowded bus stops because they have places they must go and have no other practical choices for transportation. It doesn't have to be this way if our governments made sure these folks didn't need to travel and/or if #WMATA ran more buses.
What do we expect people who still need to go to work, or still need to get groceries, to do? What power do they in themselves have to forgo those obligations? Simply asking people to stay home isn't enough. Assume those on the street have good intentions until proven otherwise.
The individual blame game is convenient, because it doesn't require us to look at our present situation and think about the unresolved systemic issues that are actually causing much of the individual behavior we don't approve of, but that doesn't make it right.

Practicing social distancing is made more difficult by these station closures and continued rail and bus service cuts, but yes, I'm sure people will keep this in mind to the extent that they will be worried about it while on their overcrowded buses, for example. 😞 #wmata
The order of operations was all wrong for how we scaled back transit service *before* addressing all the underlying causes for why people were riding. Instead, #WMATA shamed riders publicly in their communications, and those who need to get around continue to struggle to do so.
So far, it's largely been a regional, political failure that reflects our national one. #WMATA was used as a pawn, and the transit agency not only rolled over and complied, but sent disparaging comments over the wire targeting riders just trying to get groceries. Shameful.
