Write for a reader who can click away at any second.

A reader who is distracted. A reader who is stressed out about work. A reader who has a million things to read and still isn’t sure your article is worth their attention.

Because it’s true.

That’s your average reader.
Patrick Makes a great point here. Two things can be true, depending on context.

1) Your average reader is busy, and you should remember that.

2) The magic of online writing begins when you stop writing for the average reader.

But I’m well-aware of the fact that I have to earn people’s attention the entire time. Without that crippling fear, my writing wouldn’t be nearly as strong.

I think about this comment from Steve Pressfield every day.

Here’s his advice:

1) Reduce your message to its simplest, clearest, easiest-to-understand form.

2) Make it fun. Or sexy or interesting or informative.

3) Apply that to all forms of writing or art or commerce.
