#OTD 1948. National Assistance Act introduced.

Provides support for those not covered by Nat Insurance - such as the homeless, the disabled and single mothers.

Bevan declares 'this occasion marks the end of a whole period of the social history of Britain' as Poor Law ends.
The Act was the work of Nye Bevan and Jim Griffiths and was seen as a key plank in the 'Cradle to the Grave' plan for welfare.

It ensured that local authorities would provide accommodation for any individual that needed care or support
Griffiths claimed the act would 'transfer the responsibility for making cash payments from the local authorities to the nation, and now the burden will be equally shared by all the people'
