There is absolutely debate within the transgender community over the question of whether someone's original name should never, EVER be used. Ford is not acting from any understanding of the late Stephens' preferences -- he is pretending this is a 100% settled issue in all cases.
2/ Vice puked all over itself on exactly this issue, stampeding all over a trans developer's own preferences about how these issues are handled

3/ None of this is to say that people's old names should be hurled at them when they have expressed a desire otherwise. But the claim here, which the Times quickly ceded to, is more radical than that: That the names can NEVER be *referred to*.
4/ I'm muting this thread because I'm sure it'll attract garbage but when you hear form trans people who can't express opinions on basic, not-yet-settled issues online because of self-appointed Marginalized People Defenders like Ford, you get a little frustrated on their behalf.

1/ Eh I'm deleting this tweet which was too endorsement-sounding. I read the piece quickly and was mostly drawn to the discussion of internecine bullshit. I found some of the critiques people responded with immediately compelling, such as
2/ @EricLevitz here. I don't think the author is wrong about the craziness of the internecine stuff but of course it is hard to square some of the other claims with (for example) solidly middle-class and up people fighting to raise the minimum wage to $15
@EricLevitz 3/ I think there are major issues with class and the donor/consultant class of the Democratic Party, and I raised one of them here and have written about that elsewhere. But that's different from this piece's argument.

There's a lot of interesting stuff here, some that I agree with and some that I disagree with, but one thing that jumps out at me is how 'entitlement' is now seen as a causal explanation for why men rape people which offers explanatory power. There's a

2/ fuzziness to this logic, because of course you could take any act you don't like committed by any person and attribute it to their sense of 'entitlement' -- they felt 'entitled' to do it, of course! -- but this sorta reminds of "It's about power, not sex" storytelling about
3/ rape, where the goal seems to be just as much about portraying the perpetrator in a certain light that is compatible with political claims as about offering a truly plausible and thought-out explanation about why some people do terrible things.

2/ I guess the advantage of having it be the government is, if you're in the U.S. at least, they're accountable. But most progressives seem intent on giving huge amounts of speech-policing power to, like, Google and Facebook, which consistently shocks me. Less accountable!
3/I was surprised at how during the Carlos Maza thing (before he came out as explicitly pro-internet-harassment), so many progressives openly endorsed standards for YouTube that would be tighter than what prevails on basic cable. Complete myopic lack of foresight about tradeoffs.
