Surah Al-Ahzāb

Madini surah. Ahzāb means confederate army.

Groups of different people came together for a similar cause. Multiple groups of non Muslims to get rid of Islam once and for all. Over 10k troops. And they marched on Madinah.

Details of the battle not given here but this surah references the victory that Allah SWT had over this army and it is mentioned explicitly in this surah.

This one of Allah’s greatest miracles for the Muslims. V.9. Allah sent a wind and armies you could not see.

Allah singles out those who doubted Him. When they were stuck in the same place for a month and supplies were dwindling. Armies externally and perhaps internal armies as well. He says I know you had doubt

Thus this surah also focuses on the hypocrites versus the believers.

Some of the hypocrites wanted to flee and made up excuses. Others Allah say you would have abandoned this religion if you had been given a choice by the enemies. You would have gone back to kufr.

The hypocrites stayed with Islam only when it was strong and wished to leave when it became weak. They have a vacillating nature.

But truth is independent of political strength.

The believers, however, when they saw this army, they did not flee, they said this is what Allah and the messenger has told us. Thus, it only increases them in their faith, submission and certainty

At times of stress, at times of danger, at times of anxiety, we need to strengthen our resolve by turning to Allah. That is when we need imaan the most.

Once Allah and his messenger have decided something, if you are a muqmin you must submit, if you are not a muqmin, make your own choice and face the consequences.

A muqmin will sin. But when he commits a sin, he knows it is wrong.

A muqmin will not try to change the paradigm of wrong and right to fit their deeds.

Allah fought on your behalf. Allah is All-powerful and Almighty.

The power of the language of the Quran is shown again. “I took care of that battle for you”. In the same way that He says about pharaoh “We drowned them”.

There is no marriage on Earth that doesn’t have ups and downs. Allah SWT made the prophet SAWS human so that even he had some issues between himself and our mothers. So we can learn from them.

Some of our mothers wanted a better lifestyle now that the prophet SAWS had access to more wealth (around five years after Hijrah)

It is completely permissible for a Muslim to live within their means as long as those means are halal.

However the prophet SAWS is not like any of us SubhanAllah. It would not be befitting to the prophet of Allah to live a lavish lifestyle. It’s also not who he is as a person. He was a simple man.

So the prophet SAWS felt tension between himself and our mothers. And he withdrew for a whole month. He slept in the masjid.

Note. It is the husband who leaves. Never does the wife get kicked out.

Even in issues of anger, be gentlemen to your wives.

Then Allah SWT revealed v.28.

Say oh prophet to your wives, if you want the beauty of this world, come I shall give you till you are happy and then I will let you go in a beautiful name.

He says in the most gentle way, we will part ways.

But if you choose Allah and the messenger of Allah, in that case you will get the abode of the hereafter and Allah SWT has promised for you a magnificent reward. V.28-29.

Everyone of our mothers stayed with the prophet SAWS.

Our mothers are also told, you are not like other women. You are the wives of the messenger.

And also when you speak, do not speak in a soft tone so others may read into it. Speak in an appropriate manner.

So do not speak in a way to bring about temptation in those who have a disease in their heart. And Allah acknowledges they have a disease.

Stay in your houses and do not display yourselves like the women of the jahilya.

O prophet, tell your wives, and your daughters, and the women of the believers, that they should draw their cloaks over themselves. That is more appropriate so that they can be recognized as virtuous women. V.59

Between the verse in Surah Nūr and the one is Surah Azhāb gives us all we need on the Quranic paradigm of feminine modesty.

A headscarf that covers the bosoms and loose clothing is what is prescribed together in these verses.

One of the most explicit verses on gender equity in the Quran: v.35

The real equality is spiritual equality.

This surah also deals with the marriage of the prophet SAWS to Zainab. She was previously married to someone he had taken as a son (Zaid).

This verse came down to nullify this old Arabian practice of “sonship”.

Every child should be the son of whoever his father was. Call them by their fathers’ names. That is more just by Allah SWT.

This does not fall under the concept of adoption. Islam encourages adoption strongly.

This surah has a sub motif of the status of the prophet SAWS and obedience to him.

O messenger we have sent you as a witness, a bearer of good news, a warner, a caller by the permission of Allah, as an illuminating light and give the believers the good news that for them there is a great reward

Conclusion: ends with day of judgement. The proper will say those people lead us astray. Give them extra punishment.

Over and over the Quran shows us that if we have poor role models we will be led astray.
