Best case scenario: finding the cure for COVID-19 means finding the cure for aging.

(Yes, this is actually not totally crazy. Aging is actually a coordinated molecular mechanism, not a series of random accidents. @davidasinclair is a Harvard prof, he's been researching this.)

1) Direct lines to users
- email
- website
- phone number
- crypto addresses

2) Indirect lines to users with some platform risk
- mobile apps
- social media
- ads

3) Indirect lines to users with high platform risk
- quotes to media corporations
Put another way, from a commercial perspective you want to have the lowest cost, highest fidelity communication to your users.

Showing direct ownership of your own distribution is becoming a more important part of valuation discussions. Harder to deplatform or distort.
Every quote you give to a media corporation is a business decision & should be treated as such.

Do they offer you enough distribution to be worth the distortion? Their incentives are not aligned with yours, after all.

Better to go direct by default, with occasional exceptions.

Analogy: COVID-19 was a sudden, sharp, unexpected force. As in physics, it didn't just change the speed at which things were going, it changed their direction.

Sharing economy? Done.
In-person events? Down.
Remote? Way up.

It's this directional shift that was most disorienting.
However, while COVID-19 persists as a force, it feels like the *directional* change is slowing down. We're now in the trench warfare phase of the pandemic.

Even if there is a significant 2nd wave, or >10X as many cases worldwide, or more lockdowns, it's no longer as unexpected.
It's like the difference between 9/11 versus 7/7.

9/11 was shocking and strategically unexpected. Totally new threat, changed the direction of the West.

7/7 was shocking yet only *tactically* unexpected. People knew terrorist attacks might happen, just not when & where.

There is a genuine, understandable, and yet bizarre sense in which the pandemic has now become normalized.
Having failed to put out the viral fire, people try to put it out of mind.

We have solved nothing. We have the possibility of more NYC-like flare ups.

But what was once exceptional is now less so. From 9/11 to just another terrorist attack. From the 1st COVID death to the Nth?
It’s “just” a sharp, detectable reduction in the quality of life for many and a loss of life for some.

The overall sense I get is that some countries that failed to control it have given up and decided to try to live with it, even as it retards or stops so many daily activities.
