The Press Release from the College of Europe about Mogherini is out. It's actually longer than I had expected.

Para 2 is interesting - it is happy to note Van Rompuy is not a member of the Academic Council, but neglects to mention he was the Search Committee

Para 3 is neat. It blames the delays in the process, and the limbo, on the European Commission not the College itself.

Also Para 3: "The Selection Committee then came to the unanimous conclusion that Mrs. Mogherini offered the best combination of qualities of all six interviewed candidates"

How this is possible is beyond me, because she does not comply with the criteria laid out.

Para 4: "unanimous decision to propose her for appointment to the Administrative Council"

Interesting definition of "unanimous" there. There was no vote. At best you can describe this as "by consensus".

Or at least that's how we'd do it when teaching about the EU 🤷‍♂️

The Monar statement (Para 6) is interesting, and also very defensive in its tone. It also notes there was not "any form of external influencing" - interesting that the word 'external' is added there.

Monar is correct to assert that the process was in line with the Statutes of the College. It was.

It was not in line with the criteria laid out in the job advertisement, but that of course gets no mention.

And of course there is no mention of the financial aspects and that Mogherini cannot take decisions relating to EU funding (as stipulated in the Commission Decision).

I am sure everyone reading this will have the impression that all is completely fine and dandy.
