There are people over 50 in this town who have known nothing but brutal foreign military rule for their entire lives. Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine is the longest in modern history, with no end in sight (Israel's illegal annexation is about to declare it permanent).
Today marks 72 years of the Nakba, which is often mistook for a historical event whose memory needs to be kept alive.
But it hasn't been 72 years SINCE the Nabka, but 72 years OF the Nakba, because the process of erasing Palestinians & driving them out of their homes in order for Israel to be created actually continues to this day in order for Israel to expand its control over all of Palestine.
The hundreds of destroyed villages of pre-48 Palestine will never be what they were, and even my father's hometown under occupation will never be what he remembers it once was. But change is inevitable, and Israeli apartheid too will not remain what it is today.
The day will come when apartheid is defeated, and while the new Palestine won't be the Palestine of our families' memories and collective nostalgia, it will still be a free Palestine. and that day is worth fighting for! #FreePalestine
