Why on earth do people think there is ever a good time to panic?

I entirely fail to understand what good comes from putting our hair on fire.

Will we think better with our hair on fire? Will we be better able to plan and mount an effective defense?

1/
A little bit of agitation is good. It motivates us to action. It stimulates voter turnout. Too much is paralyzing. And pointless.

I warned you all to expect more Crisis and Spectacle between now and Nov so when it comes, you won't set your hair on fire

2/
I find the sudden desire for panic fascinating given the timing.

Why panic now, when we’re less than six months from an election?

Look, I get it. I understand the urge to panic. Democracy is under attack.

3/
The antidote to democracy under attack is more democracy, or what Barack Obama calls “citizenship”⤵️

Our democratic institutions are being battered and damaged.

The antidote is to strengthen the institutions.

4/
Past the point of salvation? Really?

My husband's family lived through the Pinochet dictatorship.

The nadir of American democracy? Seriously?

Do an exercise: Think about what it was like to be a black woman in American in 1860. Just imagine it.

5/
The point of Active Measures is to cause people to lose faith in democracy and democratic processes.

The idea of a civil war at this point is silly.

If there's violence it will be a law enforcement issue. Besides, just stay home. Good luck having a civil war in a pandemic.

6/
I am going to speak harshly.

Fear mongering is dangerous. Riling people to rage is destructive.

If you want to make sure Trump loses in November, get busy ⤵️

Rage tweeting is not political activism.
It's lazy and entitled . . .

If I understand this comment, people panic because they feel like they are doing something when there is nothing that can be done.

Seriously? There is nothing to be done?

Okay, Twitter Mom is about to deliver a lecture. Prepare yourselves . . .

8/
Before the Civil Rights and women's rights movements Jim Crow was the law of the land and women were denied opportunity.

People born after 1955 inherited an expanding liberal democracy that people devoted their entire lives to.

9/
I just wrote biographies of Susan B. Anthony and Thurgood Marshall.

They literally devoted their lives to improving American democracy and creating more equality and justice.

What we inherited came from their hard work.

Sometimes people who inherit things feel entitled.

10/
They think they don't have to work for what they inherited.

They think their inheritance is their birthright.

They think that what other people devoted their lives to building is theirs and all they can do is whine when someone tries to take it away.

12/
This isn't the nadir of American democracy. We had slavery, for goodness sake.

Get a grip, people.

Democracy means "rule by the people." That means us. That means you.

If it isn't working it's because of us. We're not doing what we should.

See my list and get busy. Okay?

This person thinks I am the "media" and I'm shirking my moral duty 🤦‍♀️

My moral duty??

She also told me I'm the "only one" talking about Civil War when this entire thread was responding to someone's talk of Civil War.
And the great leader said, "Okay everyone, panic! And they did! And it really, really helped. Had they not panicked, things would have been much worse."

Kidding. That never happened.
