New York City has been the epicenter of the U.S. coronavirus outbreak: Nearly 200,000 cases and, as of Saturday, at least 20,000 people dead.

But the virus hasn't been felt equally. We're tracking its impact across the city’s ZIP codes and neighborhoods. nyti.ms/3fST9Vb
Income and living conditions are two reasons that areas in New York City are being affected differently.

Outbreaks are worse in places with lower incomes and where more people are living together. nyti.ms/3fST9Vb
Some of the hardest-hit places in New York City are in Queens. In East Elmhurst, a working-class neighborhood with a median household income of about $54,000, more than 1 in 23 people have had the coronavirus. nyti.ms/3fST9Vb
Wealthier New York City neighborhoods in Brooklyn have seen relatively low rates of the virus. In Gowanus and Park Slope, where people make more than twice as much as those in East Elmhurst on average, the rates of the disease are much lower. nyti.ms/3fST9Vb
In the Bronx, New York City’s poorest borough, rates of infection are higher than almost anywhere in Manhattan. nyti.ms/3fST9Vb
The coronavirus spreads more easily in crowded places, so people living in close quarters are likely at higher risk.

Parts of Washington Heights, where people live in more crowded households on average than anywhere else in Manhattan, also has one of its highest rates.
Staten Island has a median income second only to Manhattan, but significantly higher rates of the virus. That could be because of more testing, or the large share of health care workers and first responders who live in the borough. nyti.ms/3fST9Vb
We’re tracking details about every reported case in New York City and across the U.S., collecting information from federal, state and local officials around the clock. See more. nyti.ms/3fST9Vb
