We were warned in the 1970s that our grossly materialistic, mercenary, rapacious & driven global economy was inherently unsustainable on our finite, vulnerable & (even back then) overpopulated planet.

How did our leaders respond?

They put it into super-global & turbo mode.
I looked on in disbelief & put my mind to trying to understand this madness, which amounted to nothing less than us committing civilisational suicide. It's taking awhile, because of the scale, but we will get there in the course of this present century, I have little doubt.
I'm not the only one to recognise this (see, for example, The Dark Mountain Project, @darkmtn), but the majority of people, incl. the academic & political mainstream, do not, or certainly do not act as if they did. Although, there is clearly much Orwellian doublethink in play.
Where we are heading does not bear thinking about, so we don't; we just get on with our lives, as we did during the Cold War, under the constant threat of nuclear self-annihilation, which has receded, but not gone away. But what else can we do, except get on with our lives?
Then there's the madness of mass immigration into the West & the Orwellian ideology of post-racial multiculturalism & DIVERSITY, which can't be criticised without eliciting accusations of "racism" & "hate speech" from Big Brother & his minions, who dominate western society.
The ideology of post-racial multiculturalism & DIVERSITY is Orwellian, because it involves state authority telling citizens how they should & shouldn't FEEL & THINK about RACE.

The rationalisation of this Orwellian behaviour is that it is anti-fascist & anti-racist.
However, today's anti-fascist & anti-racist ideology goes to the opposite, but equally insane, extremes of Nazi racial ideology & serves Big Brother & his minions as an instrument of socio-political intimidation & control.
Academics do not want to be held responsible for this madness, but it is the job of social scientists to understand society & its ill. The very survival of our civilisation depends on them doing so, but they are failing us, themselves & their own children.
One could get very angry with social science academics, but that would only cause them to respond as academics have always tended to do, when their ideology & authority was challenged from outside academia.

So, I'm just asking academics very politely to check their privilege. 🙂
For once, I'm not being ironic, when I suggest that someone check their privilege, because it is academic privilege which blinds academics to socio-political reality. A reality, which social science academics are looked to as authorities on understanding.
