Maharaja Ranbir Singh Jamwal of Jammu & Kashmir

An albumen print photograph of H.H. the Maharaja of Jammu & Kashmir, Ranbir Singh Jamwal (r. 1856-1885) taken by Bourne and Shepherd and published by them in the year 1876.

(1/n)
Maharaja Ranbir Singh was second of the Dogra Rajput rulers of Jammu & Kashmir and succeeded his father Maharaja Gulab Singh Jamwal, the founder of the Kingdom of Jammu & Kashmir, after the latter's abdication of throne due to old age and illness.

(2/n)
Maharaja Ranbir Singh is credited for expanding the territories of Jammu & Kashmir into Gilgit Baltistan. In addition to his military successes, he was known for commissioning research on ancient texts and sites.

(3/n)
This would later bring about translations of works like the Rajatarangini and the research works of Sir Marc Aurel Stein. Maharaja Ranbir Singh expanded education and literacy, modernized the governance by bringing about administrative and law & order reforms.

(4/n)
He also promoted the local industries, which led to financial and social upliftment of his subjects, i.e. the people of Jammu & Kashmir.

Trivia: This image of Maharaja Ranbir Singh is often cited as that of Raja Dahir of Sind who came in conflict with the Umayyad Caliphate in 712 AD. This obviously is not accurate since photography didn't exist during Raja Dahir's lifetime.
