#LIVE: Hong Kong legislature became a chaotic brawl as it resumed Monday 11 am. As the pro-democracy camp is trying to use a black cloth to cover the chairperson’s seat as a form of protest, security and the pro-Beijing camp try to shield the chairman, pro-Beijing Chan Kin-por.
“Shame on the pro-Beijing camp. Chan Kin-por has abused his powers,” pro-democracy lawmaker Tanya Chan chants. But she is soon stopped by security guards at the Legislative Council. The pro-democracy camp seems to fail in besieging the legislative meeting despite much efforts.
Fanned by the pro-Beijing camp, the scuffle between the pro-democracy camp and the Legco security has intensified. Several pro-democracy lawmakers have apparently lost their balance and tripped. In the meantime, security guards carry them away from the chamber.
For the time being, at least 11 pro-democracy lawmakers have been ousted and carried away by Legco security, including Lam Cheuk-ting in the footage. The pro-democracy camp claims that Chan Kin-por is an “ineligible” host in this meeting and the entire meeting is “illegitimate”.
Pro-Beijing Chan Kin-por quickly begins the voting process as the brawl calms down. This election aims to elect a new chairperson at the Legco’s Home Committee. The pro-democracy camp seems to have failed in reclaiming the meeting despite much efforts.
No pro-democracy lawmakers is involved in voting process. Meanwhile, pro-Beijing Chan Kin-por unilaterally announces pro-Beijing Starry Lee to be the new Home Committee chairwoman after obtaining 40 votes.
The pro-democracy camp meets the press as soon as the meetings ends, grilling pro-Beijing camp for having shoved an election through “illegitimate means and the violation of usual practices” at the Legislative Council.
Meanwhile, the pro-Beijing camp condemns their pro-democracy counterpart for causing disorder and using a black cloth to attack Legco security. They say they also hope the legislature “can return to the right track”.
Just some fun stuff: A local independent media outlet has published a picture of pro-Beijing lawmaker Elizabeth Quat ordering mangos during the election of the Legco’s Home Committee chairperson. Wondering how seriously the pro-Beijing camp treated the meeting.
