Enough said about that article as such. The writings of H&RM vs B&W are not Twitter kind of stuff. Writings of both are available now (at last!). Those who care can READ both and judge on the basis of that; not twitter 1/9
Two other more important debates should be: if not like this, then HOW do we deal with systemic racism – both in the field and analytically integrating this global structure with other analyses + question about journals' responsibility for fostering productive interactions 2/9
On systemic racism, we offer some ideas in the long response and hope to get into (more) productive discussions in the future on this. The best about all of this: to see how many who care about getting more attention to racism in many different ways 3/9
Was this too much twitter noise? Far from ideal route. I’d never imagined using T for anything like this. When SD sprang the surprise publication on us last August, we expected some cooperation with the journal to get an appropriate &quick response THERE. Ideally side by side 4/9
SD at no point acknowledged us as party in this. No rights were granted us BECAUSE OF being the target of unusual attack. Our reply= anybody can submit a 4K comment on any SD article &have it reviewed. A RIGHT is what H&RM now fortunately get for a rejoinder to the two replies
Had we been able to reply quickly in SD, no need for social media. Instead, the attack was up for 9 months, most downloaded article, already cited in publications, adopted in courses. We wished when after 9+ months getting our reply up to draw attention to it; finally 2sides 6/9
And we DO want to start a debate. Not so much about what H&RM did and why. More: @SecDialogue What is responsible journal behavior in cases like this? What should they do now? Did we all learn something? Did they? 7/9
No explanation from SD, neither here nor in a dozen emails to us: why publish problematic article? Any specific rationale? Why not sent to us to allow simultaneous reply? Why so hostile when we contacted them after? Misunderstanding (COPE) post-publication mechanisms? 8/9
Journals are a crucial institution and mechanism in a scholarly field. They are complex centres of power. Their exercise of this calls for accountability vis-à-vis the research community they serve. #StillWaiting #SDscandal 9/9
