This twitter process is bad. Can we limit the damage? Now, I will get 100 tweets “you should have thought about that earlier”. No comment! (You can guess my answer, if you really care.) I intend to stick to my own twitter silence but to have one go at possibilities 1/10
Intimidation, shaming and threats have absolutely no place in academia. Critical race studies is a legitimate and important field of study for uncovering forms of power too long left unchecked within and beyond IR 2/10
I call upon all incl those who have supported my criticism of the paper to abstain not only from direct acts that make wider circles of critical scholars feel unsafe, but from rhetoric that facilitates such acts 3/10
That many young scholars have thanked us because they have feared being called out baselessly by anti-racists is no excuse for the same in reverse. The fact that fear is so widespread on all sides is a matter for joint concern 4/10
All parties could generalize less. Sweeping critiques of ‘identity politics’ often practice what they criticize. Those who worry for young critical scholars should beware of counterproductive performativity of the narrative that it shows every critical race scholar open to attack
This one article was unusual because of its combination of violations of basic standards otherwise followed also by critical race scholars. And the shape and form of the ‘conclusions’. Compare to quality work from the same approach. To ‘both sides’: don’t generalize 6/10
In my view, the original article was always going to lead to grief; for all parties. Misjudged by authors & editors? I hold my hands up and say that I misjudged twitter dynamics. I stand by the argument and the content of the reply article & the call on SD to rethink procedures 7
In a twitter-only world, everything started with my tweets. No! The university paper CPH spotted the original article in November; I convinced them to wait, to enable debate based on article+replies instead of journalism only. This week we witness spread through all media in DK 8
All parties could usefully question mistakes made. I certainly will count mine. De-escalating & de-securitizing might create space for more nuanced and safe debate and for rethinking within each community. At least securitization theory suggests as much 9/10
For the record this is not a late conversion moment. I am on record defending critical race theory, acting to secure spaces for new voices. Tried in 1st interview carefully to protect the legitimacy of the field at large against this specific case bit.ly/2WOFHdo 10/10
PS: Despite silence, if the false narrative continues about "an orchestrated campaign" (already disproved in earlier tweets), I will have to answer. This is such a serious accusation. And wrong.
