"Rolls-Royce to cut 9,000 jobs as Covid-19 takes toll on airlines"

There seems to be a big snag with the furlough programme. RR has 4,000 employees furloughed in the UK. But if it then makes 4,000+ redundant, jobs aren't saved but taxpayers still paid.

So of course the coronavirus accelerated job losses. But the seeds were sown and nurtured by Brexit.

IMPORTANT
The UK Government does not include in its daily toll the death of anyone who tested positive for COVID-19, but whose test was carried out by one of the Government's commercial partners.

In other words, "pillar 2" deaths aren't being reported.

All we see is the number of people within "pillar 1" who have died of COVID-19.

But only 180,202 people from the pillar 1 contingent have tested positive to date. So the 36,393 deaths reported to date come from those 180,202 people (20.2%)

The other 73,993 positives? Who knows!
So the daily Department of Health tweets are totally misleading.

They report a total number of positive tests.

They report a total number of deaths.

But those deaths only come from a subset of the people within that total number of positive tests. The "pillar 1" subset.

The infection was doubling every 3 days. So in one week, the number of infected people went up over 4x.

In other words, by acting a week earlier we'd have had only a quarter of the number of infections and deaths.

Based on ONS figures, over 30,000 people would still be alive.
Another way of looking at those stats: Boris Johnson has been alive for 20,426 days so far.

That means his dither and delay have cost the lives of 1.5 people for every single day he's been on this planet.

"Deaths rates in England have fallen to the same level as in an average winter as the devastating impact of coronavirus wanes, the chief medical officer has said."

A truly odd comment at the press conference this evening, given that it's not winter.

But of course if someone reads it quickly, they may think that the *total* death toll is the same as in an average winter, which is a different story entirely. The death rate is the number of new deaths per week, not the total number of deaths across the whole pandemic.
It's like saying "this banana weighs the same as an average grape".
