I can sympathise with the problem of sick parents looking after a child and seeking support.
Somewhat less when you are the chief adviser to the government that brought in rules that didn't allow for that possibility, and which others had to and presumably did follow.

Even less when the claim is made that something was lawful when it quite clearly was not. I recall many lawyers here with real concerns about the relevant legislation, which were ignored by government.
And basically this, along the lines I was thinking but why so many people will rightly feel very angry.
PS is there literally no UK story that EU-obsessives can't turn into something to do with Brexit? 
No idea these days whether senior government figures who break rules have to resign, but surely a gift for the opposition if he does stay in being able to ask at any turn whether the rules are different for key advisers than to everyone else
