The charge sheet against Cummings - from his own words. His wife fell ill but after spending time with her he returned to work. It might not have been covid-19, but might not, still reckless given the timing and government advice...
We are then asked to believe that he has no possible childcare options in London (look out for this one, it will be back), and the regulations are clear that the risks to a child make this an exceptional situation - if so please cite that regulation...
This is rather worrying - even though many people in Number 10 had come down with coronavirus apparently there was no possibility to work from home. Otherwise this would seem to breach guidelines.
Many have gone into this - is it a reasonable excuse to drive to another location to isolate there. Don't know, not totally clear legally, but certainly against the PM's stay at home guidelines.
3 problems here. 1st, you've potentially taken coronavirus to another region, that was why you were supposed to stay at home. 2nd, the unlikely claim of no taxis in Durham (better excuse, you're all sick). 3rd, miracle recovery from could barely stand to picking up family.
Remember that there was no childcare available in London earlier? Turns out that on recovery it might after all be possible...
2 problems at least with driving to Barnard Castle. It appears not to be a valid reason for leaving home under coronavirus law, and it is questionable whether driving to test your eyes is not against other laws. At least, I hope it is...
The legal rules did not cover all circumstances - do you think the chief adviser to the PM might have access to someone who could help him with the interpretation? Or indeed do a better job of ensuring the rules did work in what seems a fairly likely circumstance?
You would be hard pushed on this evidence to say case closed, not guilty. In particular for going into Number 10 with a suspected home case of coronavirus, then taking that to Durham, then driving to Barnard Castle with no good excuse, the defence has problems. /end
PS Before we say Cummings was actually the victim here can the police corroborate that his house was being targeted in late March? Because then I'd expect security to have been provided, as I'd expect it is being now. A long running issue for some MPs.
