After a very successful experience with #virtualinterviews, I thought I would create a little #tweetorial for my #MedEd colleagues looking for some tips and tricks on how to convey your program’s best assets virtually. From your friendly #urogyn team @OHSUSOM 1/
My biggest piece of advice is to make all of your interactions intentional. Come up with a game plan for how and what you want to showcase. For us, it was important to convey a spirit of collegiality that (I think) is our program’s greatest strength. 2/
We started our mission by sending individualized emails to each interviewee from one faculty member and one fellow four weeks prior to the scheduled interview. This served to 1️⃣ open lines of communication 2️⃣ begin to introduce our program and #PDX. 3/
The following week we sent a Urogyn department video introduction to each candidate. Each faculty member and fellow filmed their own introduction at their favorite spot in #pdx. Highlighted our program, our amazing team, as well as an intro to our incredible city. 4/
The following week we reached out with a token of our #pdx love. Usually we would take them out to one of our favorite spots in #pdx for a pre-interview dinner. Instead, we took a bit of those funds and sent them @stumptowncoffee and @MoonstruckChoc. Who doesn’t love ☕️ & 🍫?! 5/
We opted to host a virtual pre-interview #HappyHour the night before the interview day for ONE hour with fellows only. To avoid awkward silences, the fellows prepared some of the most common ??s we usually get about #pdx and our program. Encouraged BYO🍺 & 🍷 . Went very well! 6/
One week prior to the interview, we tested our virtual telecom software (we use WebEx at @OHSUSOM). This allowed us to troubleshoot issues that might arise and to figure out the easiest way to structure our interview sessions to maximize efficiency. 7/
Interview Day! We started in a common “room” for a one-hour program overview. Attended by fellows, faculty, interviewees, and program administrators. A great way to get everyone on the same page and to highlight what makes OHSU Urogynecology the best place to train! 8/
From there, each candidate was given a link to their own interview “room” where they would remain for the duration of the interview day. This allowed for US to bear the burden of having to switch rooms and was designed to make it as easy as possible for the candidates. 9/
Each interview was 20-minutes with a 10-minute buffer. We felt it was important to give candidates and interviewers an opportunity to decompress, grab more coffee/water, and use the bathroom if needed. After all, we are Urogynecologists - we KNOW urinary urgency. 10/
Thanks to our incredible program administrator, we had a designated #PDX Lounge “room” that was open all day where candidates could pop in for troubleshooting issues or to say hello. This was 🔑 to the success of the day and was a wonderful resource. 11/
We concluded the session with a 10-minute wrap up where faculty, fellows, and candidates reconvened to address any last minute questions and say our thank-yous and goodbyes. 12/
One of the usual highlights of our interview day is the tour including a trip on the Portland Aerial Tram. I created a tour video of @OHSUSOM and the hospital grounds in attempt to recreate some of the magic! Here is a small snippet! 13/
Most importantly, have fun with it. Be authentic and try to give the candidates an idea of what it would be like to be a colleague and part of your program. We had a blast with our #virtualinterviews and loved meeting the candidates. Hope you all find this useful! 14/
