Today's episode of #DavesCarIDService is brought to you by your local DeSoto dealer, who invites you to test drive the all-new for '42 Fluid Drive DeSotos with their safety-first cigarette box steering wheels that light your smoke for you! Keep your eyes on the road in DeSoto!
Yes, this what-were-they-thinking DeSoto option was real, and spectacular. And now considered one of the holy grails of steering wheels. This feature also inspired the aftermarket Ronson Robot-Liter and Pres-A-Lite
Alright, now let's get straight to the ID-ing: well, wouldja look at Great Gam-Gam, vamping like Theda Bara on that fender. Ignore the "Cincinnati" emblem on the grille, that's just a souvenir item. Car here is a 1926 Oldsmobile.
gotta say my favorite car ID requests are the ones featuring ancestral foremothers striking come-hither poses, like Grandma Fiebelkorn with a 1935 Ford Tudor.
And how about Grandma showing a little knee in front of this 1928 Chevrolet 2-door sedan.
Another grandma, looking like a Film Noir femme fatale in her tiger fur coat. This one is a super tough ID challenge, but the center gauge cluster seems to match 1936 Plymouth.
And here's a Threefer sister act, looking ready to bust out into a Ruby Keeler dance number in their nautical-but-nice matching sailor outfits. Car, incidentally, is a 1930-31 Dodge sedan.
Mom with the Mona Lisa smile is standing in the bed of a 1937-39 Chevy or GMC pickup.
A brief intermission to say I hope you all are enjoying this content as much as I do, and thank you for some truly outstanding submissions.
The unidentified lass here is perched on the bumper of a 1935 Chevy Master Deluxe.
This trio of ladies is looking like a still from a 60s Roger Corman epic, stopping for a desert photo op in their 1959 Cadillac 4-door hardtop. (h/t to @ArquetteSisters for tagging the photo)
Thanks to another good Samaritan who supplied the #DavesCarIDService tag, here's mom is doing her best Betty Grable with a 1955 Ford Fairlane station wagon.
A little tough on the ID call here, but I'm reasonably sure this grandma is vamping behind a 1933 Buick sedan.
One more foxy grandma pinup for the day, will be saving others for a future episode. This winsome gal is looking like the Arizona Cactus Queen of 1935, on the bumper of her 1931 Ford Model A. Sorry fellas, she's taken!
Ahh, Spring, and love is in the air, so let's turn our focus to some lovebirds. This Leatherneck is collecting a kiss from his gal on a 1949 Ford convertible sporting Camp Lejeune plates; looks like he just won her a Kewpie doll at the fair.
Another 1949-50 Ford providing a necking spot for this cute couple. Let's face it, shoebox Fords were mid-century Love Machines.
ID'd this one yesterday, but it fits in with the love theme; these beachcomber hugbuddies are with a 1950-54 Nash Rambler convertible.
Pa is mashin' on Ma in front of a 1935 Dodge.
These newlyweds in the Radio Flyer wagon are heading off to Hot Springs in a 1937 Ford Tudor.
Another affectionate couple in a 1959 Chevy Impala Sport Coupe customized with fender skirts and Olds Fiesta tri-bar flipper hubcaps (L), which possibly resulted in the baby and more family-practical 1956 Chevy Bel Air 4 door hardtop (R).
I'd enjoy spending all day IDing these love stories, but I've got a big backlog of various heaps to identify- like this 1949-51 Chevy Fleetline sedan
That there is a lovely 1931 Ford Model A phaeton.
Thelma Todd's Cafe! Pacific Palisades CA. A bit fuzzy here, but I believe the first 3 cars from left are 1935 Ford 3 window coupe, 1933-34 Ford Fordor, and 1936 Chevy, Olds or Pontiac 5 window.
Thelma Todd was quite a hotsy totsy Hollywood starlet known as "The Ice Cream Blonde," whose career spanned silents and talkies, and a real life Film Noir story. She died mysteriously at her cafe in 1935, and I assume the pic above was contemporaneous to it.
The story of Thelma Todd's death is a bit of real world Sam Spade mystery.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thelma_To…
Sure can, it's a 1939 Ford Deluxe convertible, one of my favorites. This one signals evidence of a modern driveline underneath.
Left is 59 Buick, right is 54 Cadillac.
Yessir, on the left is a 1937 Hudson Terraplane coupe, with chopped roof; on right is a much more common 1969 Cadillac de Ville, which kinda looks like it's had a chop as well
gotta say that streamlined grille Hudson would be a bitchin' custom project to complete.
Some neat honest patina on this 1936 Ford truck.
a 1930 or 31 Ford Model A Tudor <checks steering column support> I mean a 1931 Ford Model A Tudor.
cab of a 1958 Ford super duty F-1000, their biggest size F series truck.
Gonna call it a day on the IDs, but will be back tomorrow for a special Memorial Day theme. I'd love to see some of your photos of family service members with their cars... remember to please use the #DavesCarIDService hashtag.
