And this is where we now come to - a Prime Minister apparently so dependent on a single adviser that he is prepared to turn the government into a laughing stock during a pandemic in order to keep him. politico.eu/article/boris-…
I've never noticed a shortage of those who believe only they can be the PM's chief adviser. Cummings has to be replaceable in theory. And in practice, there's actually no evidence that he's particularly good at a job inside government.
Cummings is a self-professed visionary. Like his governing skills there's no particular evidence to support him being particularly good at this. Lots of long winded writing, but how often has any of this been cited as important? Can't recall one.
Can't deny Cummings election and referendum record. But when I look from outside particularly given the last few days I see someone whose need to be the dominant figure (and the PM's need for that) is probably damaging effective government.
Personal bias against Cummings or the government? None whatsoever, this is basic observation of the government. It isn't as if we see plenty of accounts to the contrary. /end
PS we should probably also be asking what Cummings does if he survives in post. Quite likely a doubling down on himself as the heart of government to the exclusion of all others. Unlikely to be pretty. Or a good way to run the country.
