Critical Macro-finance: a theoretical lens focused on the co-evolution of global finance and the macro-institutions of the state, in the tradition of Hyman Minsky (1957) and, more recently, @adam_tooze (2018) analysis of the global financial crisis.
in my contribution, I outline 4 propositions of the CMF approach: a story about the diffusion of Americanised national financial systems and a new de-risking role for the state for new (green/SDG) asset classes and new systemic liabilities (repos, ETFs)
CMF puts the political/critical in @PMehrling 'money view'
CMF enables us to flesh out the political economy of evolving liquidity practices in three areas: the mechanics of financial crises, the sovereign bond/safe asset basis for (US/Germany) structural power, and the production of new (non-dollar) asset classes
it also focuses analytical attention on monetary time: how do we understand time-critical liquidity, produced on balance sheets of hitherto neglected systemic actors such as CCPs?
it follows Zoltan Pozsar 'in shadow banking, money begins where bank deposits end' in identifying new forms of money for market-based finance
it traces political struggles around structural pressures for the state to de-risk: collateral securities (for systemic liabilities), exchange rates and new asset classes
CMF can shed light on #COVID19 responses: the de-risking state in action, from Germany to the US Federal Reserve, without measures to enforce structural change in/reduce political power of global finance cc @csissoko @MorganRicks1
finally, many thanks to @BJMbraun @i_aldasoro @YannisDafermos @anninak82 and the excellent @WarwickCFG for comments, suggestions and tough editing.
