Disabled people, these protests will not be accessible to us, this moment is. We have to be ok with that. There are other ways we can be supportive.

Boost the legal advocacy centers for your city and funds aimed at providing supplies to protesters.

I know how many of us
Die at the hands of police. I know it hurts we cannot safely be a part of this moment physically.

But the safety of black people should be our utmost priority and we cannot show up with our mobility aids and give the police a reason to escalate violence even more.

As I see
Them, I will boost the funds of orgs on the ground.

Please stay safe. Please keep my people in your thoughts. Please do what you can to keep them safe to and unlearn the racism that permeates disability spaces as well.

The reason why ableism is so insidiously entangled with racism in institutions is because if you say policies are for the “protection of disabled people” and not the “exclusion of Black people and racial minorities,” most people will protect those policies to play hero.
For instance, you’ve probably heard a lot about covid deaths in institutions and nursing homes.

Well, guess who have been some of the most ardent opposition forces when it comes to closing those inhumane places? Parents of disabled people and direct care unions.

One of the most useful tools to upholding white supremacy is ableism.

Why else was it previously impossible to get health insurance with a preexisting condition if not for the fact that structural racism affects health?
Why would healthcare rationing guidelines target the conditions that affect black and brown communities the most?

Why would this nation be struggling to contain Covid 19 outbreaks in nursing homes, jails and institutions if they and the staff that worked there weren’t mainly
Black and brown?

Why doesn’t accessible reliable transportation exist in black and brown neighborhoods?

Why are there income limits for those needing Medicaid and a social safety net?

You’ve probably seen this video of a white supremacist accosting an essential worker and using “HIPPA” to justify why she shouldn’t have to wear a mask.

Not only is she a dipshit for saying “HIPPA,” but I think the ADA has been met in this video, let me explain.

Using the ADA, or Americans with Disabilities Act, as a weapon is a favorite method of white supremacists to skirt policies that benefit black and brown people (see voting in GA). Not only does it pit BIPOC against disabled people with this but it shows how selectively enforced
