Good husbands, responsible boyfriends, compassionate brothers, uncles, fathers, all taking the hit and hate for the animalistic conduct of some perverted men. An innocent girl got raped & deserves justice, & your little misandristic mind chose to reduce this to gender banter? 🤮
I’m disappointed at celebrities and public figures, who rather than mobilize advocacies for stronger laws against rape and police reforms to tackle force brutality, have chosen to minimize this big issue to mere demonization of men and pointing of moral compass.
The victims of Police brutality in Nigeria especially as perpetuated by SARS are always mostly Men. We adopted the #EndSARS campaign to advocate for reforms. The focus wasn’t on how only males were being targeted. Even when one Kolade was killed, we called 4 end to the brutality.
In the US where racism is driving cops to target/kill Blacks, Black Men are mostly at the receiving end. But we all see how the advocacy is targeted at “Racism” (not some #StopKillingMen myopia) because that is the big picture, that when you get right, everything is corrected.
Truth is if we get too shallow and focus on minimizing the seriousness of rape to the gender more affected, we may wake up tomorrow to see the opposite gender becoming the more prominent victims, because the real issues are not being tackled. What do we do? #SayNoToRape
Gender-based violence doesn’t imply that the perpetrators of the violence against one gender are essentially the opposite gender. Not at all. It focuses on the gender that’s more at the receiving end based on normative perceptions. GBV cuts across all genders and groups.
So police brutality (especially) on black men is also gender-based violence, same as SARS violation of Nigerian men. However the focus is to checkmate policing and oust force brutality in general. How? We need stronger laws & reforms, forensic investigations for solving crimes,
Database of profiles, Digital collections of markers such as fingerprints, past and serving criminals, etc. More crime solving and preventive measures too eg public cameras, mandatory cctvs, we need more education against rape in our schools and other institutions etc.
We won’t stop rape by demonizing men in general, because rape is a perverted societal ill that cuts across both genders. It exists in the gay community and is also perpetuated from women to men. This is why we shouldn’t be narrow minded in canvassing for wider solutions.
Crime has never been stopped by advocates only preaching morality and expressing disgust at the perpetrators. It ridicules the pains of the victims who need quick & deserved justice. Armed robbers will continue to rob, but with stronger laws, we can reduce robberies to minimum.
The entire Criminal Justice System in Nigeria also needs serious revamping. There’s no justice without strong laws, there’s also no justice when laws are not implemented. Offenders must be found and prosecuted and sentenced. That is when many intending rapists will get the strong
signal and desist front their evil ways.
This is why all of us must become advocates against rape. In knowing that when we call on our institutions to wake up to their responsibilities, we destroy the loopholes that enable offenders get away. We also prevent them from offending.
