The Sikh scripture starts with:

Ek Omkar (One Universal Creator God)
Satnam (The name is Truth)
Karta Purkh (Creative being personified)
Nirbhau (Without Fear) Nirvair (Without Hatred)

At the risk of being flagged by Indian govt for publicly speaking up about this, here we go:
#neverforget1984 On June 1, 1984, the Indian military attacked Sikhs’ holiest place of worship, the Darbar Sahib, followed by days of senseless killings of Sikhs across the country, years of state-sponsored violence and abductions.
Despite studying in Punjab from KG to grade 11, I NEVER learned about the 1984 Bluestar Operation in my history books

We have been taught to keep quiet, to never talk about 1984, for they were “all terrorists”, and hence, the State has no choice but to desecrate Darbar Sahib
Were the senseless killings of Sikhs and Hindus after the Bluestar operation also justified?

What about the inter generational trauma due to pre- & post-Bluestar Operation events?

What about the gag order on public discussion?
To this day, the sheer mention of the Bluestar Operation can create an unspoken silence, a rift between Sikh and Hindu Indians, AND amongst Sikhs themselves.
I had a light bulb moment during one of my classes on Social Determinants of Health with @GeraldMckinley:

what if the increased incidence of depression and anxiety amongst my relatives is tied to inter generational trauma due to pre- & post- BlueStar Operation violence?
I recalled the story of a relative who narrowly escaped an abduction at College, while his friend was shot to death in front of his eyes. After a long battle with PTSD, he died by suicide.
36 years later, countless families like his continue to live with the inter generational trauma of 1984, knowing that there may never be justice or reparations in their lifetime.
As a Canadian citizen living outside of India, I am embarrassingly aware of my “privilege”—of freedom of speech. But this also means that I must use it to #neverforget1984
Let us take a moment to remember & to reflect. To keep an open mind. To give our community the space to grieve. To rise from the ashes. And above all, to always advocate for love and peace.
