Webinar notes
Some points of consideration #COVIDー19 #vaccine development:

Which populations should be studied first?

Which endpoints will be clinically meaningful (or not) for clinical trials

Viral Load Testing: e.g., its utility in upper vs lower resp tract

1 of 4
@ArthurCaplan is sceptical about a #COVID19 vaccine in the next 12 months, due to many challenges such as:
- vaccine efficacy
- distribution issues (WHO vs US; where the initial batches of vaccine go. could set off international disputes)
- many vaccines require > 1 shot

2 of 4
If you are waiting for ppl to get naturally infected by #COVID19 & the virus ebbs and flows, you will wait for a long time.

@ArthurCaplan discussed *human challenge studies* (ethically controversial, too) as an alternative to standard #COVID19 vaccine studies.

3 of 4
Challenge studies will be conducted on younger healthier patients. Unlikely to recruit elderly/those with weaker immune system in #COVID19 #challengestudies -> efficacy issues (?)

Scientists would be sceptical to see an effective response in 65+ group in standard studies, anyway

Few years ago, I was offered a scoop of an ice cream named “#ColonialStreet” at @NLChocolateCo

Which #bipoc wants to PAY for a taste of THAT when they can have it for free?

Same ppl who said to me then “what’s the big deal?” now supporting removal of racist elements

I see you
After learning that their ice creams are named after streets in #newfoundland , I filled out a survey asking @NLChocolateCo, “Why would you want to commemorate #colonialism by naming an ice cream flavour after it?”

I never heard back
For those asking why it was “such a big deal to me”

It was one of the many reminders that I didn’t “belong” in the city of #StJohns, #newfoundland & in #Canada. In that moment, I wished to go back to my homeland, India.

The Sikh scripture starts with:

Ek Omkar (One Universal Creator God)
Satnam (The name is Truth)
Karta Purkh (Creative being personified)
Nirbhau (Without Fear) Nirvair (Without Hatred)

At the risk of being flagged by Indian govt for publicly speaking up about this, here we go:
#neverforget1984 On June 1, 1984, the Indian military attacked Sikhs’ holiest place of worship, the Darbar Sahib, followed by days of senseless killings of Sikhs across the country, years of state-sponsored violence and abductions.
Despite studying in Punjab from KG to grade 11, I NEVER learned about the 1984 Bluestar Operation in my history books

We have been taught to keep quiet, to never talk about 1984, for they were “all terrorists”, and hence, the State has no choice but to desecrate Darbar Sahib
