1. There has been substantial, often controversial, debate over the past year about the racist use of the term ‘Anglo-Saxon’. To get the background, if you’re not already familiar with it, see 👇
2. In my view: the term presents all of us, whatever we do & whoever we are, with an ethical Q. It is fundamental to a commitment to equality, justice, & human dignity to support any group which tells us that a term is discriminatory, offensive, & an aspect of their oppression.
3. This is precisely such a case. The only feasible action is to stop using the term. There are plenty of once-common terms which are no longer used as they are offensively used to ‘other’ groups discriminated against ...
4. ... on the basis of skin colour, religion, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, mental health, class, etc. This case is no different.
5. This is the least we can do. My experience of growing up in apartheid S Africa, and in the women’s movement, taught me that we must also educate ourselves, however imperfectly, about discrimination both in the outside world & within ourselves (whether conscious/unconscious).
6. As far as racism is concerned see the readings suggested by @isasaxonists here:
7. As regards the academic debate: this is not an historiographical question. The term’s academic use doesn’t override the ethical imperative. We must collaborate to identify/coin alternatives to describe the period, its subdivisions, history, archaeology, literature, language.
8. Academic problems with both the term and its interpretations of the period between 400 and 1066 are discussed in my book on ‘The Emergence of the English’. END
