/ The CEOs of today's information gatekeepers (Facebook, Google, Twitter) are charting a perilous path between Scylla and Charybdis. On the one hand they face the ultra left-wing politics of their employees. On the other the plurality of users who don't share those politics. 👇
/ Of these CEOs, Sundar - Google's CEO - is in the weakest position. He does not have the internal credibility of a founder, nor the credibility of a CEO who has tranformed the company, as Satya Nadella has at Microsoft.
/ In a recent mass-walkout by Google employees, Sundar appeared weak and the employees had the audacity to demand representation on the company's board of directors, among a number of other extremely left-wing demands.
/ Twitter's CEO, Jack Dorsey has chosen the most employee sympathetic path, but the one most antagonistic toward the political right (and the US President). His company has provocatively begun labeling tweets by the President as misleading or glorifying violence.
/ Politically this is a suicidal path for Twitter to take. Instead of acting as an unbiased information platform, it has become an editor for what represents truth. As @nic__carter insightfully points out, political debates are rarely about facts, but how they're interpreted
/ Mark Zuckerberg has taken the most politically neutral path, stating that Facebook should refrain from editorial decisions and allow its users to decide what's true. While this has lead to an employee backlash, Zuckerberg has the credibility of an owner to push this through.
/ Furthermore, Zuckerberg has launched a Trojan horse against his employees. By ostensibly increasing employee freedom, allowing all Facebook employees to work from whatever location they choose, he has greatly increased the geographic extent from which he can find employees.
/ Over time this will reduce the concentration of left-wing politics at the company and make it so no employee or group of employees can hold the entire company hostage.
/ The coming years will see an unprecedented clash between the new information gate-keepers and the State. It's becoming increasingly clear that it is incredibly difficult for the CEOs of these companies to find a neutral path between their employee demands and national politics
