The @nytimes recently published an op-ed, “The End of Meat Is Here”. The author not only made inaccurate claims that animal ag is the leading cause of global warming, but also used #COVID19 to drive the message that Americans are giving up meat. Here’s why this is false: 1/7
According to @Feedstuffs, sales for both meat alternatives and animal-based meat have soared since #COVID19 was declared a pandemic in March. However, the gains tell two different stories. 2/7 feedstuffs.com/news/meat-alte…
Yes, dollars spent on plant-based meat have gone up during #COVID19- by 1.5% to be exact. But keep in mind, meat alternatives are significantly more expensive than animal-based meat (200%+) so the percentage in $ growth will be higher. 3/7
Here’s the gold nugget: Animal-sourced meat has seen an additional $5 billion in sales. Plant-based meat– just over $100 million. This means, the increase in $ spent on animal-based meat during the pandemic has been 50x higher than the increase spent on meat alternatives. 4/7
In addition, the @Feedstuffs article also states that gains for plant-based meat in pounds has actually dropped during the pandemic, since animal-based meat’s share has sky-rocketed. The share of sales for plant-based meat for the week of May 10 was 0.7%. 5/7
In other words: Animal-based meat accounted for more than 99 percent of all meat sales at grocery stores. Animal agriculture is not going anywhere. It is here to stay and the data shows it. 6/7
